About me

dorothy smiling I coach and teach parenting to individuals, couples and groups. I have a wide experience of the issues that concern parents, having worked in schools in some of London’s most deprived boroughs, as well as the offices of international law firms and investment companies. I have written and presented workshops and courses for churches, Sure Start projects, parents of children on the autism spectrum, recovering drug users and Youth Offending Teams.

I studied education at Goldsmiths’ College, London and I have taught children and adults of all ages, as well as teenagers with learning and behavioural difficulties. I trained in parenting with the national charity Parentline Plus, and I am a consultant for Parenting UK and a member of the Parenting Practice in North London.

I was founding editor of Kids Out and I have contributed to The Guardian and Marie Clare and appeared on radio talking about family issues. I have been a telephone counsellor for Childline and a youth mentor to teenagers sailing with the Tall Ships Trust.

Last, but not least, I am the mother of a teenaged son.

Important
‘I like the way Coaching deals with the here and now and rather than delving into the past. The immediacy is really helpful, the sessions left me with something to think about or a task to do. Dorothy got me back on track and helped me achieve clarity on what is important to me.’
Textile designer and mother of two

Helpful
''It's been really, really helpful. My sessions with Dorothy have made me more able to think about what it is that I want and what it is that I really value.”
Development worker and mother of two

Happier
‘I’m much, much happier - I value myself more. Now I know what I need to do to make my life work for me.’
Owner of health and beauty centre

Invaluable
‘I found the process invaluable. I now have a clear understanding of my goals and understand how to make them attainable.’
Services administrator for a national charity

Positive
‘Dorothy was extremely easy and productive to talk to, very positive and a strong listener. She was good at channelling my thoughts and objectives into a number of positive thoughts and objectives that I could translate into action. She is absolutely great.’
Transport manager and mother of two

Independent
‘Talking with other parents and having Dorothy's calm, guiding presence enabled me to get out of a rut. I could see that I had got into a routine of doing too much for my children and then resenting it. What they really need is help to become independent. The classes helped me to see that more clearly.’
Angela, company director and mother of a teenaged daughter and two sons
